What is Medical Waste?

In Michigan medical waste includes Cultures and stocks of infectious agents, Human and animal blood and body fluids, Sharps. Pathological waste (organs, tissues, etc.), Contaminated animal waste infectious to humans.

Disposal Options for Medical Waste

Most facilities use a professional medical waste management company when it comes to disposing of medical waste. One thing to keep in mind though is not all medical waste disposal companies are created equal. First, you will want to make sure they are listed in the Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy website here. This way you know they are registered in Michigan and regulated by Michigan. You will want to see an EGLE Registration Number by their mane. Next you will want to make sure the company directly hires the people that come into your office, and they do not use a third-party service, or sub-contract the work. Along with that, you want to know if the trucks that come to your facility are owned and branded by them and not someone else’s brand or company name on the trucks. Lastly, you will want to ask if they own the treatment plants that destroy your medical waste.

Important Regulations for Medical Waste Disposal

If your company generates any amount of medical waste in Michigan, you will have to register and complete an Application for Registration as a Producing Facility of Medical Waste with the EGLE. A producing facility that transports medical waste off the premises of the producing facility shall package the medical waste in the following manner: Sharps shall be contained for disposal in individual leakproof, rigid, puncture-resistant containers that are secured to preclude loss of the contents. In addition, a container used to store or transport a number of individual sharps containers shall be leakproof. These containers shall be conspicuously labeled with the word “sharps”. However, sharps shall not be compacted or handled during transport in a manner that will result in breakage of a sharps container. Medical waste other than sharps shall be contained in bags other than body pouches or other containers that are impervious to moisture and have a strength sufficient to resist ripping, tearing, breaking, or bursting under normal conditions of usage or handling. The bags or containers shall be secured so as to prevent leakage during storage, handling, or transport.

If you’re handling medical waste, there are a few precautions you can take to make the process safer for yourself and those around you. First, make sure you are following OSHA’s Code of Federal Regulations 1910.1030. Second, make sure you have a designated area for storing your medical waste. You don’t want to leave used gloves and other materials on benches or in boxes where they can easily fall out and get lost. You also need to be careful about who has access to your waste storage area. Waste storage areas should be clearly marked and have restricted access at a minimum. Finally, if you’ve handled a lot of blood-stained materials, you should clean your work area with a disinfectant like bleach to make sure you don’t spread any diseases via a surface that hasn’t been thoroughly cleaned.
