Regulated Waste Acceptance Policy

Regulated Waste Acceptance Policy

Regulated Waste Acceptance Policy. Bio-MED policy requires compliance with all appropriate regulations regarding the packaging, transportation, and treatment of medical waste. Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations require the generator of regulated waste to certify that the collecting and documentation of transported regulated medical waste complies with DOT regulations regarding classifying waste, in addition to packaging and labeling documentation. To ensure that neither Bio-MED nor the waste generator violates relevant regulations, it is imperative that both parties are aware of the rules regarding correct identification, classification, separation, and packaging of the waste. The overall purpose of this Regulated Waste Acceptance Policy is to summarize the minimum requirements for preparing your medical waste for collection, transportation, and treatment. Additional facility or state-specific waste acceptance policies may apply based on permit specifications. Please contact us for further information 800-736-2466.

Regulated Medical Waste

Bio-MED accepts medical waste generated in a wide range of medical, surgical, diagnostic, educational, cyclical, and therapeutic activities. The Medical Waste Tracking Act of 1988 defines medical waste as “any solid waste that is generated in the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of human beings or animals, in research pertaining thereto, or in the production or testing of biologicals.” Except as defined by specific regulations made at the state level, this excludes RCRA hazardous waste pharmaceuticals, all DEA scheduled drugs including controlled substances, cauterizers solvents, bulk chemotherapy, waste that contains mercury or other heavy metals, chemicals, batteries, reagents, corrosives, or materials classified as hazardous waste under Federal and State EPA Regulations. Additionally, Bio-MED cannot accept liquids in bulk, radioactive materials, or complete human remains (including heads, full torsos, and fetuses). Bio-MED cannot and will not accept these excluded materials disposed of as regulated medical waste, per this Regulated Waste Acceptance Policy and in compliance with local, state, and federal laws. Certain and specific protocol and packaging requirements apply for the disposal of non-hazardous pharmaceuticals. Please contact us for further information.

Waste Segregation

The generator is responsible for proper segregation and packaging of medical waste. Proper segregation and packaging reduce the risk of harm or unintentional spread of infection. DOT regulations state the following requirements for segregation and packing: rigid, leak resistant, moisture resistant, of sufficient strength such to prevent tearing under normal conditions of use and for handling, sealed to prevent leakage during transport, and puncture resistant for safety handling sharps. Should you have questions regarding the Regulated Waste Acceptance Policy or proper segregation and handling of containers, please contact us today and a Bio-MED representative will be happy to help you educate your employees and staff.
