Michigan's Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations

Bio-MED Cares about your business needs and ensures that we are in compliance with all Federal and State of Michigan regulations. Michigan’s medical waste disposal regulations are managed by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Michigan Medical Waste Regulatory Act (MWRA). To see guidance documents and Michigan’s medical waste disposal regulations, visit the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality here

A written Medical Waste Management Plan is required for your facility. For a sample Medical Waste Management Plan, please refer to the Department of Environmental Quality here

Storage of waste on premises cannot exceed 90 days in MI.

We understand the strict state regulations about the amount of time your medical waste can be stored at your facility and will always follow the guidelines to keep you compliant. For new customers that have experienced lengthy delays with their previous provider, we have the ability to provide same day pick up in most of our service area.

Your medical waste may be stored outside, but must be in a secured area or locked in a container that weighs MORE than 500 lbs. To assist with your storage needs, Bio-MED offers outside storage upon customer requests. Generators must prevent access to the secured area by vermin or unauthorized individuals.

Employees who handle medical waste must be trained before assuming duties. Refresher training must be provided when a change directly affects an employee’s duties. Bio-MED offers training to all employees and also provides refresher training.

Training and Registration

Generators must create and keep employee training records for a minimum of 3 years, containing:

  • Employee’s name
  • Job classification
  • Dates of training

Generator registration is required. Registration fees are shown below:

  • Private practice office with fewer than 4 licensees: $50.00
  • $20.00 for each additional licensee
  • $80.00 for four or more licensees

Certificate of registration is valid for 3 years; Registration forms are available on the Department of Environmental Quality website here

  • These guys are top-notch. Chris has been doing this long enough to know all the idiosyncrasies that come along with medical waste removal issues, and will save you a ton of problems. As far as reputable, professional and experienced, I recommend Detroit's own BioMED. You cannot go wrong with these guys! testimonial divider Bill K.
  • Our company (9 physician Orthopedic Practice) started with Bio-Medical Waste in January of 2013 after a long relationship with a larger company. I had researched the State of Michigan website for alternative companies and found their name. One thing we like is the personal relationship we have with Bio-MED. So call them for a professional, fairly priced service you will be thankful for. testimonial divider Diane P.
