Michigan's Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations
Bio-MED Cares about your business needs and ensures that we are in compliance with all Federal and State of Michigan regulations. Michigan’s medical waste disposal regulations are managed by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Michigan Medical Waste Regulatory Act (MWRA). A written Medical Waste Management Plan is required for your facility. For a sample Medical Waste Management Plan, please refer to the Department of Environmental Quality here
Storage of waste on premises cannot exceed 90 days in MI.
We understand the strict state regulations about the amount of time your medical waste can be stored at your facility and will always follow the guidelines to keep you compliant. For new customers that have experienced lengthy delays with their previous provider, we have the ability to provide same day pick up in most of our service area.
Your medical waste may be stored outside, but must be in a secured area or locked in a container that weighs MORE than 500 lbs. To assist with your storage needs, Bio-MED offers outside storage upon customer requests. Generators must prevent access to the secured area by vermin or unauthorized individuals.
Employees who handle medical waste must be trained before assuming duties. Refresher training must be provided when a change directly affects an employee’s duties. Bio-MED offers training to all employees and also provides refresher training.
